Hiii, everybody! I am back from hanging out with
accordingtomel. We clocked many, many hours of television, avoided the outdoors, played nerdy games, ate a lot, had a two-woman Merlin finale party, and squeed/ranted/laughed until it hurt. To sum up: it was awesome.
Was overall pleased with the last three episodes of Merlin; they don't completely make up for the garbage they threw at us (and the metal things thrown at Merlin's head) for most of S3 but they were at least strong enough that I don't despair of a totally craptastic S4. Which is somewhat even more frustrating since eps like these show that the production team are capable of brilliant writing/direction/editing, so the weak episodes suffer even worse in comparison.
Santiago Cabrera and Eoin Macken had better become series regulars next year. How adorable were they? Very. Gwaaaaaine. Best new character in any show, ever. Basically if S4 consisted purely of him, Merlin and Arthur going on quests all the time, I'd be a happy camper. So many hearts for Gwaine. His whistling at the guards and then that utterly gleeful smile? Agh, so freaking cute.
And dear Leon. What needs be said of Leon? Everybody loves Sir Leon. (Including Gwen, apparently; holy chemistry, Batman.)
accordingtomel and I were very tickled at his and Morgana's first canon scene together, heehee. We ship Leon/Morgana for absolutely no reason, so of course canon would blow that to pieces straight away.
Also, while I am glad to have the knights (HOT, HOT KNIGHTS) gathered, what was the point of Percival? Besides being 80 feet tall? The whole round table scene, though, OH MY HEART. Hi, early canon Arthur, I've missed you. Please stay.
Relatedly, Julian Murphy has made himself out to be a sexist, awful, ignorant man. I fart in your general direction, sir. Pathetic.
Unrelatedly, many thanks to
elle_blessing for the lovely v-gift! *hugs*
Tradition dictates that I get sick every time I get back after a trip, so naturally I am now having to blow my nose every five minutes. Still, better now than during the visit, eh? How have you all been? I haven't been able to check the f-list diligently, so if you have exciting things to share, point me in the right direction!

on 2010-12-07 06:47 pm (UTC)I still have post-finale hangover. I treat it with hair of the dog by watching bits and pieces of it again pretty much every night. Perhaps there will be no withdrawal symptoms if I wean myself away? Idk.
Anyway, yes. I do not despair for S4, which is the best part of everything. I hope they can keep a lot of the knights around. STAY PUT SANTIAGO. I have missed your sweetness as Lancelot. I'd love to see him and Gwaine interacting a bit, actually. I am sure Gwaine could shock him with some tavern talk!

on 2010-12-07 09:52 pm (UTC)And I'm so glad Lancelot had his little fireside talk with Merlin, b/c somebody needs to acknowledge that Merlin is the most underappreciated person ever, and I love them being BFFs; they are so lovely and sweet and cute.

on 2010-12-07 07:09 pm (UTC)First of all, welcome back!
Secondly: what beef have you with Julian Murphy (one of the Merlin writer/creators, yes?)? Dish, sissster!

on 2010-12-07 10:07 pm (UTC)Yep, that Julian Murphy. In this interview (http://www.sfx.co.uk/2010/12/02/merlin-series-three-exec-producer-looks-back/) he said Morgana and Gwen were pretty much useless characters until this season, when they became evil and a love interest, respectively. And that he has much disdain for slash fans.
Basically, it seems like he has no idea what it means to be a writer -- that characters can grow and change beyond your original outlines for them in ways you never even thought of; that sometimes it's in the character's best interests to throw out your original plans and let the character lead the way; that the writer's interpretation of characters/events is not the only viable interpretation, or even the correct one.
In summation: Grr.

on 2010-12-08 12:25 am (UTC)I guess this won't be the last we see of Morgana, which is good for my Katie McGrath love, but I'd almost rather they just killed her off for all the horrible things they've done to her character this year.

on 2010-12-07 08:44 pm (UTC)Also, "No, I don't fancy it." *giggles*
Despite the fact that Percival didn't say much, he is a new favorite to me.
And a big fat LOL at Morgana's pig squeal.

on 2010-12-08 12:35 am (UTC)I figure a day or two of drinking warm things and sleeping early will set me right again (though there is a dinner engagement I'm hoping to worm my way out of this week, so I'm not trying very hard to get better).

on 2010-12-07 10:21 pm (UTC)I join you in your Lancelot, Gwaine and Leon squee. (no surprise there, then.)
what was the point of Percival?
But I'm glad they didn't write Percival more thoroughly - all the more room for us!

on 2010-12-08 12:38 am (UTC)Ooh, good point! Although I think I'll have to finish this behemoth of a fic w/ Mel first before I start thinking of writing anything else! I'll leave Percival in your good hands for now :)
